YPP Weekend Blockades, November 18-19: This is a test, this is ONLY a test. If this were an actualy blockade, you might win an island.
Sat 2017-11-18 12:54:39 (single post)

This just in: The first blockade on the Obsidian Ocean is LIVE. Or will be at noon game time. CLOSE ENOUGH.

The location is Triplet's Treasure, but the island's ownership is not actually at stake nor will be any time soon. Instead, each of the three flags that come out on top will receive a prize: a nice new flag hall with a charm item out front.

This is a non-sinking, three-round event. All ship types welcome. Canons are real; alliances are not.

With less than an hour to go, the flags who have declared their participation and who are now accepting jobbers include... Amateur Hour, Lion's Bane, Blame Brenda, Fanatical SOULS, Art of War, Organized Crime, and For Fox's Sake (gasp! language! I see what you did there). More have probably joined in the time it took me to type that out. I don't know if there's an official pay cap, but right now I'm seeing no offers higher than 1,000 PoE/segment. Correction: Organized Crime has raised their job offer to 2,000 since I wrote this, and Consequence Free have joined in with an offer of 1,111. Clearly there is no pay cap. May the highest bidder get the most jobbers!

This is not reflected in the schedule below because I haven't actually added Dark Seas to my homebrew jury-rigged klugemonster of a PHP/MySQL interface that I use to collect blockade data and spit it out in a neat little list every week. So that'll be my homework for the week.

Anyway, be aware that this is indeed the first blockade ever on the Dark Seas, and as such IT IS A TEST. Things may go wrong! Technical issues may arise! Set your expectations accordingly and let the developers know what you think.

Back in the classic Puzzle Pirates world, the Meridian Ocean is silent thus far. Cerulean is chugging along just fine with a nice handful of varied blockade activity. Emerald's blockade schedule consists almost entirely of Spoon Republic scuttling around. Which is to say, they're running multiple and mostly simultaneous defenses against brigand kings up and down all the archipelagos. They're also getting attacked by Frank Town who exist, according to their public statement, in opposition to "the toxic members of the ocean."

Don't be a toxic member of the ocean, mmkay?

Standard reminders: Schedule is given in Pirate Time, or U.S. Pacific. Player flags link to Yoweb information pages; Brigand King Flags link to Yppedia Brigand King pages. BK amassed power given in parenthetical numbers, like so: (14). YPP Weekend Blockades, October 28-29: Carve a real pumpkin, get fake prizes. Not as bad a bad deal as it sounds.
Sat 2017-10-28 13:14:54 (single post)

OK so! Blockade schedule. But first, a confession: The Friday Fictionette for Oct 27 is late and, due to bad time management in the face of scheduling conflicts including traveling circumstances, won't see the light of day until Sunday, October 28. And by traveling circumstances, I mean I will be getting on a train this afternoon and won't have reliable wifi until I get to Chicago tomorrow afternoon. I will be recording the MP3 in my sleeper roomette most likely somewhere between Omaha and Galesburg. There should be some amusing and entirely irrelevant background noises, possibly including the sound of the Snowball iCE mike falling over.

There. I have confessed. I feel better now. Onward!

So we're in the midst of the annual YPP Pumpkin Carving Contest. Real pumpkins, really carved. Pixelated prizes. If pumpkins are not an option for you, the rules specify a hierarchy of replacement vegetables:

Obtain a real pumpkin. If pumpkins are not available where you live, you can try any type of gourd, squash, etc. If those aren't available, you may use a melon.

I admit I am disappointed there's no mention of turnips.

I am also, by the way, totally amused at the public statement by Flag Bang. Click through to their Flag page to see it. It's not just me, right? Y'all get the joke? Don't you? *Sigh* Nevermind.

YPP Weekend Blockades, October 21-22: Let the Halloween Games Begin
Sat 2017-10-21 13:24:23 (single post)

Blockade stuff in a moment. I gotta do the Friday Fictionette announcing thing because I failed to do it last night. Right after I uploaded the release, I had to run away to a very important skating party. So for those of y'all who aren't already getting the notifications via email due to being Patrons already, here's the details:

Title: "In the Suburbs of Good and Evil"
Links: ebook | audiobook | HTML excerpt
Synopsis: The neighborhood misfit discovers that the neighborhood darling has a dirty little secret--but who'd believe her?

Excellent. That out of the way, let's talk Puzzle Pirates.

There's a new global competition just got started yesterday in honor of the Halloween season. We're trick-ARRR-treating! Trick the brigands, collect the treats. The team with the most treats at the end of the competition wins!

In the interest of getting this post out on time, I'm going to leave it at that and just refer you to the schedule, below, for your Blockade news. Good luck all! May the best disguise win!

some old fictionettes may be ready for their close-ups
Wed 2017-10-18 22:52:04 (single post)

Oh, hooray. Today went much better. Stuck to my routine for the morning, did the various things over a long lunch break, and got back to work in time to have a decent afternoon shift of revising short fiction before it was time to go play. (My flaggies and I on the Cerulean Ocean did a Kraken Hunt. I brought home my very first Kraken Egg! Go me.)

(If you are not familiar with Puzzle Pirates, that probably won't make much sense. Just smile and nod.)

Anyway. Short fiction! I'm getting busy with it. I've become aware recently of a bunch of podcasts newly open to submissions of short-short fiction, and they're cool with reprints.

For instance, there's Toasted Cake, that most elegant and yummy podcast by Tina Connolly. She ran a story or two every week from December 2011 to May 2016 or thereabouts. (One of them was mine, by the by. I have multiple reasons to think fondly of Toasted Cake.) Then, after 150 episodes, she had to stop for a while. But now she's back! She's accepting submissions during this month right here, October 2017, and in the meantime she's running a weekly episode now through the end of the school year.

So I'm working on a batch of three stories to send. For a moment, I thought, "What do I have? What do I possibly have? I don't think I have anything much at all..." Then I thought, Hmm, 650-1000 words. Reprints OK. Doesn't that sound like something I've been doing every week since August 2014?

So it's happening. I knew it would someday. Turns out "someday" is today. I've begun dipping into the Friday Fictionette archives for possible submissions material. The first candidate is "Out of Sight, Out of Mind," the Friday Fictionette for October 10, 2014--and, incidentally, that month's Fictionette Freebie, so if it should end up being podcast or otherwise published in the wide, wide world, you'll be able to compare and contrast the original with the new version even if you're not a Patron.

Because I did spend a good part of this afternoon revising it. Fictionettes aren't rough draft when they go up on Patreon, but they are rough. I think I'm happy with it now. It lost some 50-75 words along the way, and it gained maybe 25 words that were much better for the purpose. I think the result is tighter and more sparkly.

Now to get two more short pieces ready to go. Hopefully I'll be able to get right on that tomorrow.

YPP Weekend Blockades, October 13-14: this fictionette will sail the Haunted Seas (yes, we're crossing the streams again)

  • 1,324 wds. long

First off, I have the week's Friday Fictionette to announce. It's a day late. (Sorry. Feeble excuses are made in the Author's Note.) It's "Word Made Flesh" (ebook, audiobook), and, with apologies to Dr. Seuss, it's about how you unthunk a Glunk, more or less.

Next, this weekend's blockades. Are pitiful. Seriously: Two on Meridian, and that's it.

Perhaps everyone is out on the Haunted Seas? Three Graveyard expeditions is how you earn your October 2017 Seal o' Piracy, after all. Pomfret on the Cerulean Ocean has announced daily outings to help you earn yours. A small posse in Meridian Parley are discussing combining their efforts toward a similar goal.

YPP Weekend Blockades, October 7-8: Can't stop the signal
Sat 2017-10-07 12:37:10 (single post)

Happy Saturday, pirates everywhere! This weekend in blockades features the rabid attack of anything that moves by flag Dragon Lords on the Meridian Ocean. Can't complain! Can't have a blockade without somebody willing to attack someone else! And this valuable service would seem to be provided on the Emerald Ocean by flag Cluster Service. Meanwhile on Cerulean, Kismet is organizing an expedition to retake Prolix Purlieu from the forces of evil, or at least from the forces of Admiral Finius, Most Sharply Dressed Brigand King Upon the High Seas.

In other news, pirate radio returns to YPP! DJ Jakeipoo of the Cerulean and Obsidian Oceans has announced an initial livestream address, http://us.ishout.net:2199/start/yppradio_resident/ (I haven't been able to get it to work, but you might) and would like any aspiring DJs interested in the project to contact him on the Obsidian Ocean.

YPP Weekend Blockades, September 30-October 1: Can't put it off any longer
Sat 2017-09-30 14:06:29 (single post)

I'm late and I'm also at a location with verrrrry sllllowwww internet, so this blockade report is coming at about one third the usual speed. Alas and alack! But while I'm waiting for my login to the Opal Ocean to resolve, I can tell you this much:

  • Dark Seas has launched on Steam!
  • Steam exclusivity has gone into effect for Dark Seas!
  • Blockades on the Obsidian Ocean are coming. Soonish.

So, yes, I have finally consented to download Steam and register a username there. Grumbling the whole while. Also, my username was taken. I ask you, who else in the history of the internet ever uses "vortexae"? Seriously? With an email address ending in @g***.a*? Is that "gmail.au"? Is that a thing? Has someone with an Australian gmail account taken the username I've employed since high school? Well. If you're looking for me on steam and you want to say hi, you can instead find me hiding under the very obscure username "nicolejleboeuf".

All right, I've finally given up and moved to a location with an internet connection that's somewhat faster than the speed of molasses in winter. Keep reading for this weekend's blockade schedule. Good luck, have fun, puzzle hard, shoot cannons, earn PoE!

YPP Weekend Blockades, September 9-10: Karma for conquerors; also, Dark Seas comes to Steam at last
Sat 2017-09-09 12:49:09 (single post)
  • 1,073 wds. long

Sometimes Saturday means not only a new Puzzle Pirates blockade schedule, but also a catch-up scramble for writing stuff I didn't get done during the week. Which is to say, the Friday Fictionette for September 8 is a little late. But it is out now for your perusal and delectation/scorn (circle one)! Please enjoy "Intervention" (Patrons may download the full text as an ebook or audiobook), a vignette about sentience in small electronic appliances and Regrets with a capital R.

Awright! Back to the pew-pew-pew. Crayon Box appears to be the target of choice on Emerald; having harassed their way into multiple island grabs last weekend, they are now suffering the subsequent wrath of the rest of the ocean. Knockout, Spoon Republic, and relative newcomer Bon Appetit are their uninvited guests. Even the brigand kings are going after Crayon Box.

On Meridian, ain't nothin' doin'. Not yet, anyway.

Update: Sunday blockade on Moab added!

On Cerulean, Riding High will be attacking Cnossos Island, currently owned by The Phoenix Rises, at noon today. "Why?" Doggbreath asks rhetorically. "For the wrong reason..."

This is not about sportsmanship - good, bad or indifferent, about displaying our amazing prowess on the blockade board, or even because we dislike anybody. It is about economics, pure & simple. Business is slow and we don't want to keep paying an extra 10% in rent to a semi-active flag.

There you go--principles in action.

Meanwhile, Dark Seas is set to launch on Steam real soon now. Early access will begin September 14, if nothing occurs to push the release back. Oceanmaster Cronus has all the info in this thread. (Looks like I'm going to have to cave in and install Steam finally; after the beta test is over, that will be the only way to access the Obsidian Ocean.) To support the final release of Dark Seas, the OMs are looking for to hire a video editor who can produce game trailers. They also invite the community to submit video clips and screenshots to help create the Steam store page.

YPP Weekend Blockades, September 2-3: Distilling, Bingo, and False Hopes for Meridian's Economy
Sat 2017-09-02 12:37:42 (single post)

It's a weekend for multi-drop blockades, when Trap House will attack Barely Dressed in five places at once on the Meridian Ocean, Knockout and Lit and Crayon Box will attack each other all over the Emerald Ocean, and, on Cerulean, Admiral Finius is pretty much moving in on everyone. Saturday is just packed.

(Then there's a BK attack tomorrow on Meridian's Napi Peak.)

With September comes a new Seal o' Piracy to strive for. This month's requires you to perform 4 different crafting sessions. No need for a subscription or a labor badge if you're patient; just wait for each of your four favorite labor puzzles to come around on the freeplay schedule. Saturday's free labor puzzle is Shipwrightery. Friday's was Distilling. (Friday's free game in real life was Bingo. Turns out, Bingo multitasks with Distilling quite well.)

While I was distilling around on all my pirates on all the oceans, I spotted a rare sight: Doubloons offered for sale at 5000 PoE on the Meridian Ocean. It went 16,000, then 15,000, then 5,050, 5,025, 5,000. Alas, the reasonably priced doubloons got crowded off the market again by the time I checked this morning. But at least the top offer was "only" 17,000 rather than 21,000. Maybe the market-jacking yahoos are getting bored, or, more likely, discovering their get-rich-quick scheme has limits. We can only hope.

Standard reminders: Schedule is given in Pirate Time, or U.S. Pacific. Player flags link to Yoweb information pages; Brigand King Flags link to Yppedia Brigand King pages. YPP Weekend Blockades, August 26-27: Wherein some things are prompt and others are tardy
Sat 2017-08-26 13:03:22 (single post)

So I'm late with the Friday Fictionette again, but that's no reason this blockade schedule can't be right on time. And this weekend it actually matters because there's no fewer than four blockades kicking off right at noon today. All of them are on Emerald. (So, yeah, I may have to take a few hours to earn a little PoE before I jump into the overdue writing project. Sorry kinda sorta.) Aren't you glad I'm posting this now and not several hours later?

The Cerulean Ocean also has a healthy itinerary for the weekend. That'll kick off later this afternoon and will be continued Sunday around a quarter past eleven. The YPP Forum highlights Tequila Sunrise's defense of Lagniappe Island and Blackstar's defense of Olive. Both flags promise a raffle to help incentivize your joining up and sticking around.

That's it for now! I'll post again when I've finally gotten yesterday's fictionette offering up and available. Hopefully that will be later today, but realistically it may take until Monday again. Argh. Sorry (and not kinda sorta either).

Standard reminders: Schedule is given in Pirate Time, or U.S. Pacific. Player flags link to Yoweb information pages; Brigand King Flags link to Yppedia Brigand King pages. BK amassed power given in parenthetical numbers, like so: (14). For more info about jobbing contacts, jobber pay, and Event Blockade battle board configuration, check the Blockade tab of your ocean's Notice Board. To get hired, apply under the Voyages tab.
